Shatter, wax, budder, and crumble are simply names for different consistencies and textures of weed extracts. They’re compound extracts from the hemp flower, whipped and processed in different ways to create unique textures for a diverse range of uses.

The Evolution Of Hemp Extracts

Although many hemp companies market their THCa and cannabis products as extracts and concentrates, they’re not really the same thing.

Shatter 

Shatter is the result of an extraction of hemp flower trimmings or complete flower buds through hydrocarbonation in a butane solution.

Wax

Wax first undergoes solvent extraction of complete flower buds or trimmings, depending on the manufacturer, before being purged in an oven to isolate the hemp extract from the solvents. 

However, instead of letting the extract cool into a thin sheet, it goes through a slow whipping process to convert it into a soft, waxy substance with a solid yellow color. 

Budder

Like shatter, budder is another weed extract created from either whole hemp flowers with complete trichomes or trimmings soaked in a butane, propane, or heptane solution. 

This hydrocarbonation process produces an oily liquid which the lab first cures of any residual chemical solvent before converting it into budder by whipping it into a buttery texture and color. 

If you want to dab your hemp product with a dab rig or inhale it from a vape, then budder is the right fit for you. 

Crumble 

Crumble THC products also undergo hydrocarbonation in a heptane, butane, or propane solution, after which the lab techs place the extracted oils into an oven to remove residual solvents. 

But unlike shatter, which cools naturally, crumble’s formation is more similar to that of budder. The difference, however, is in the lower temperature used during the curing process to remove residual solvents. 

Because of that low temperature curing process, when the lab techs whip the crumble extract, it forms into a sandy, thicker texture than the smooth budder. Crumble also has a darker golden color that leans more into marigold or amber, unlike budder, which is a buttery yellow tone.

You can sprinkle crumble into your joint for an elevated THC hit, but don’t try this as a beginner because the combination may be too intoxicating for your taste.
